ATA: Tell us a little bit about your educational background and how it relates to your current position.
SG: I was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. I am a graduate from Cass Technical High School and completed my Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology at Wayne State University. I have worked in community development and the education field for the past twenty years as a trainer, coach, mentor, and administrator.
ATA: Can you please tell us a little bit about your student affairs background before joining WSU?
SG: I previously worked within Wayne State University’s Counseling and Psychological Services Department (CAPS) for six and a half years. I’ve assisted students in getting their mental health needs met, provided administrative assistance, co-led the CAPS diversity committee, and facilitated events. I enjoy working with Wayne State’s diverse student population and have a strong desire to assist them in achieving their academic goals.
ATA: When you are not advising, what are some things you like to do for fun?
SG: I enjoy reading a good book, live music, the theater, cultural festivals, and anything performing arts related. I also enjoy traveling, especially internationally, and exploring new sites, people, and cuisine.
ATA: Any interesting or fun facts about yourself that you would like to share?
SG: I’ve traveled to over ten countries including Mexico, South Africa, Lebanon, the Netherlands, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, and others. I look forward to visiting more.
