Andrew McKinney is the new academic advisor in the College of Engineering. He is in the Division of Engineering Technology. I had a chance to get to know more about Andrew's background.
KB: Tell us a little bit about your educational background and how it relates to your current position.
AK: I first became interested in working with students as a member of Phi Alpha Theta, the National History Honors Society, while obtaining my B.A in History at Oakland University. I then obtained an M.A. in Anthropology. I've taught anthropology courses at two local community colleges for the last three years. During that time, I found that I enjoy helping students succeed outside of the classroom.
KB: Can you please tell us a little bit about your student affairs background before joining WSU?
AK: As an adjunct, I worked with students during office hours and during my time as the faculty advisor for anthropology clubs. I was a student success coach at Macomb Community College. Just before coming to Wayne, I worked as a student success coach at Madonna University.
KB: When you are not advising, what are some things you like to do for fun?
AK: I enjoy walking in nature, spending time with family, listening to NPR, reading, and traveling.
KB: Any interesting or fun facts about yourself that you would like to share?
AK: I have an affinity with Ireland, and I've traveled there over ten times since 2016. Over the years, I became friends with a family who owns a cattle farm in County Galway. They let me stay with them, and I help them on their farm. We joke that they are my adopted Irish family.
Another fun fact is that I obtained my graduate degree from Wayne State. It's great to be back at Wayne working as an academic advisor!
We are so excited to have Andrew join the College of Engineering advising team. Please welcome him to WSU!
