Andrew Zyrowski is the new academic advisor in the Mike Ilitch School of Business. He is working in the Frederick Hessler Student Success Center. I had a chance to get to know more about Andrew's background.
KB: Tell us a little bit about your educational background and how it relates to your current position.
AZ: I received my BS in Political Science from Central Michigan University. I am currently in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program here at Wayne State! While my undergraduate degree doesn’t necessarily relate to my profession, I was able to connect with individuals who would go into higher education, and I received my first job after graduating in AdviseMI which led me to discover my passion in working within this field. I am hoping to use my Masters of Counseling to work as a Mental Health Counselor in higher education.
KB: Can you please tell us a little bit about your student affairs background before joining WSU?
AZ: I had the opportunity to serve in an AmeriCorps position in my hometown after I graduated from CMU. I worked in the College Advising Corps through the AdviseMI program where I worked with high school students to further increase post-secondary enrollment, whether that be at a 2- or 4-year institution or even a trades program. After my service, I worked as an Enrollment Advisor with Siena Heights University within their Global Campus. I guided students from when they first inquired all the way up until graduation. Essentially, I was a one-stop-shop for these students. Since June 2022, I have had the pleasure of working with the wonderful staff and students as a College Advisor with the Mike Ilitch School of Business, where I hope to continue my growth as a higher education professional.
KB: When you are not advising, what are some things you like to do for fun?
AZ: It all depends on the time of year. But most recently, I have been travelling a lot more. After the new year I visited Las Vegas, Death Valley, and Zion National Park. Back in October 2021, I had the opportunity to visit Poland. I really enjoy going to old bookstores, with John K. King Books being my favorite. But other than that, I love spending time with my family and being able to visit my niece, along with spending time with friends and playing board games.
KB: Any interesting or fun facts about yourself that you would like to share?
AZ: The most common interesting fact I usually like to go with is I can put my foot behind my head- makes for a neat party trick, haha. Another thing, I worked at a summer camp for 4 summers, and now I give some time and volunteer for the camp when I can.
We are so excited to have Andrew join the Mike Ilitch School of Business advising team. Please welcome him to WSU!
