Carrol Reaser Parris recently joined the WSU College of Education advising team. Read on for more on her background and interests.
KB: Tell us a little bit about your educational background and how it relates to your current position.
CP: As an academic advisor over the past 10+ years within the post-secondary environment, I have worked at University of Detroit Mercy, Oakland University, Lawrence Technological University, as well as Dorsey Schools.These positions, along with my experience as a Workforce Development Professional, have prepared me for serving and delivering a myriad of advising and support services to the family of Wayne State University students, faculty and staff.
KB: Can you please tell us a little bit about your student affairs background before joining WSU?
CP: Previously my roles as Academic Advisor, Student Services Coordinator, Graduate Student Services Coordinator and as an Associate Dean and Externship Coordinator have provided a broad spectrum of professional experience within post-secondary education working with students from all cultures, nationalities, educational, and socio-economic backgrounds. Many of my roles expanded beyond my job title to include student advocate, recruitment, career services, mentor, counselor, support staff, job developer, peer advisor, committee member and event planner just to name a few.
KB: When you are not advising, what are some things you like to do for fun?
CP: I love to take walks early in the morning, it helps me prepare for the day and it is great exercise along with a little Yoga. I love traveling, rather it be on a cruise ship, traveling abroad or within the U.S, I enjoy experiences with other cultures.
KB: Any interesting or fun facts about yourself that you would like to share?
CP: I sang opera in high school (1st Soprano) and was offered multiple summer scholarships to attend the Interlochen Center for the Arts. I still love to sing. I am also CPR/First Aid/AED Certified.
