Advisor Certification

All advisors, new and experienced, are encouraged to pursue the WSU-developed Level 1 and Level 2 Advisor Certification. Level 1 is designed for new advisors with a focus on understanding Wayne State University, the role of academic advising at the University, and essential advising skills and competencies. A shorter version of the curriculum is available for the experienced WSU advisor.

Level 2 recognizes the advisors who go above and beyond in their professional development and who embody the value of “advising as teaching” endorsed within the profession and throughout the WSU advising community. Both levels require annual renewal through a variety of professional development initiatives outlined below.

Level 1

New advisors

(Start date within one year of training modules)

Level 1 WSU Advisor Certification will require the completion of:

  1. Prerequisite articles and exercises:
    1. NACADA’s Concept of Academic Advising
    2. NACADA’s Core Values of Academic Advising
    3. Steps to Establishing Student Relationships
  1. Completion of all 6 in-session modules in the Advisor Training Curriculum and the online "Advisor Tools" module.

Experienced advisors 

(Start date prior to Januray 2016)

Level 1 WSU Advisor Certification will require the completion of:

  1. Prerequisite articles and exercises (see above)
  1. Completion of modules 4,5, and 6 of the Advisor Training Curriculum

Recognition

Upon completion of Level 1, advisors will receive a certificate and recognition letter from the Associate Provost for Student Success copied to the head of their school/college or department, and formal acknowledgement at an ATA-sponsored recognition program.

Renewal

Once completed, Level 1 is renewable each year through attendance at a minimum of 4 professional development programs or events including:

  • Any ATA-sponsored training, curriculum module, webinar, or Lunch and Learn
  • The WSU Advising Summit
  • Any state, regional, or national advising conference (NACADA, MIACADA, OU Success Conference etc.)

Level 2

All advisors with Level 1 certification can complete Level 2 certification through the completion of the following steps:

  1. A professional presentation at one of the following:
    1. An ATA-sponsored workshop, training, or Lunch and Learn - Ideas include a presentation on an advising topic of interest to you and/or relevant to WSU advisors, a presentation on an advising initiative within your department or school/college, or a sharing session on something you learned from a recent conference you attended
    2. A presentation at any state, regional, or national advising conference
    3. A presentation at the WSU Advising Summit
  1. A written contribution to the WSU advising community through one of the following:
    1. A feature article for the “Advising Notes” newsletter on a topic of interest to you
    2. A written review of a journal article on a topic related to academic advising (to be published and archived through the ATA Blackboard site)
    3. Any publication in a scholarly academic advising journal such as "NACADA Journal" or "The Mentor"
  1. A written endorsement by the advisor’s supervisor (Upon request by the ATA. Contact Kate Bernas, ab9599@wayne.edu, when first two steps are complete).

Recognition

Upon completion of Level 2, advisors will receive a certificate and recognition letter from the Associate Provost for Student Success copied to the head of their school/college or department, and formal acknowledgement at an ATA-sponsored recognition program.

Additional recognition/incentive possibilities are still in development.
